The Ministry of the Interior has given gun owners a six-week deadline to surrender all unregistered firearms or face tough sanctions.
The nationwide exercise, part of a broader crackdown on gun violence, will run from December 1, 2025, to January 15, 2026. It is aimed at reducing the circulation of illicit weapons and tackling the surge in gun-related incidents across the country.
Under the Gun Amnesty Initiative, citizens are being offered a safe window to hand over unregistered or illegally held firearms to the authorities without fear of prosecution.
Launching the programme, Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak cautioned that anyone found in possession of illicit weapons after the grace period will face severe punishment. He emphasized that the initiative is crucial to building a safer and more secure society for all Ghanaians.
The Minister further announced a temporary ban on the use of firearms during traditional festivities within the amnesty period. This measure is intended to curb celebratory gunfire, prevent injuries, and protect lives in communities across the country.
