Fenerbahce have parted ways with head coach José Mourinho, bringing to a close one of the most headline-grabbing managerial appointments Turkish football has seen in recent years.
The Portuguese manager, whose glittering résumé includes spells at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan and Roma, was unveiled with huge fanfare earlier this year. His arrival was hailed as a major coup, raising hopes that he could steer the Istanbul giants to success at home and make them a force in Europe.
In a brief statement, the club confirmed:
“Fenerbahce Sport Club announces that our cooperation with Jose Mourinho has ended. We would like to thank him for his contributions during his tenure and wish him success in his future career.”
No reason was given for the decision, which ends a tenure that, though short-lived, brought global attention to the Turkish Super Lig. Mourinho’s presence had not only added star power but also underlined Fenerbahce’s ambition to compete among Europe’s elite.
His departure now leaves a cloud of uncertainty over the club’s immediate future. With the season already underway, attention quickly shifts to who will be tasked with taking over on the Fenerbahce bench and sustaining the club’s domestic and European ambitions
