Founder of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Dr. Ken Ashigbey has commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his bold and decisive actions in tackling the galamsey menace. Dr. Ashigbey lauded the Asantehene’s leadership, citing his efforts to hold traditional leaders accountable for their roles in galamsey activities. This move, Dr. Ashigbey noted, sets a powerful example for the entire nation in the fight against this destructive practice.

He drew a stark contrast between the Asantehene’s vigorous leadership in combating galamsey and the perceived inaction of other leaders, including government officials. He voiced his disappointment and frustration with the government’s response to illegal mining, citing examples such as the handling of Akonta Mining, which he believes has been inadequate.

His comments highlight the need for more decisive action from leaders across the board to effectively address the galamsey menace. Praising the Asantehene’s bold stance, Dr. Ashigbey pointed to his decisive actions against illegal mining within his jurisdiction as a shining example for others to emulate. He emphasized the need for a collective response to the crisis, urging all political parties to put aside their differences and rally behind the President in a united effort to combat illegal mining head-on.

Dr. Ashigbey unveiled plans for the Media Coalition Against Galamsey to launch fresh initiatives aimed at tackling the crisis, including mobilizing civil society, labour unions, and religious bodies to join the fight. He praised the Asantehene’s leadership as a vital step towards mitigating the environmental devastation caused by galamsey, emphasizing the need for more leaders to follow suit. He warned that a continued lack of leadership would have catastrophic consequences.
