The Chairman of the Ghana Kente Weaving and Sellers Association, Kwame Nyame, has warned individuals against exporting local kente designs abroad without approval.
He accused some people of secretly sending kente patterns to foreign manufacturers. He said the practice destroys the integrity of the craft and robs local weavers of fair earnings.
Mr. Nyame vowed that the association will not tolerate such actions. He urged government to intervene and introduce strict laws to protect the kente industry. He stressed that anyone who wants to use their designs must first seek approval and pay compensation where necessary.
Speaking at the official launch of the association and its policies at the Prempeh Assembly Hall, the chairman appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to add the kente industry to his 24-hour economy policy. He said the move would create sustainable jobs for young people.
