Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to split the Sissala East District in the Upper West Region into two.

This promise follows appeals from the chiefs and people of Nabullo, who have long sought a separate district to enhance decentralization and bridge the development gap in the area.

Speaking during a mini-rally on his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Mr. Mahama assured traditional leaders that their concerns would be prioritized under an NDC government.

He urged them to submit a formal petition as part of the government’s upcoming rededication exercise to facilitate the creation of the district if he is elected.

He noted that the district is large, with the Sissala South area situated far from the district capital, Atumu. He emphasized that population growth has made re-demarcation necessary and promised to initiate the process if his administration takes office in 2025.

The former president advised the chiefs to submit their petition through the Ministry of Local Government to ensure smooth processing. He stressed that the creation of the new district would bring development closer to the people.

The pledge is being viewed as a significant campaign promise aimed at improving governance and service delivery in remote parts of the Upper West Region. For years, residents of the Sissala South area have complained about difficulties in accessing essential services from the distant district capital, calling for a division to ease these challenges.

The proposal to create the Sissala South District has been welcomed by residents as a potential step toward closing the development gap and bringing government services closer to the people.
