The Majority leadership in Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin is expressing discontent with Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn sitting indefinitely, marking the second consecutive meeting to be abruptly ended without resolution on several pressing government business matters. This move has left the leadership frustrated and seeking answers.

Tuesday evening’s events saw the Majority Caucus vent their frustration at Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn Parliament indefinitely, with accusations flying that he is prioritizing his international travel schedules over pressing Parliamentary business. The Caucus expressed outrage at the Speaker’s move, suggesting that his trip abroad is taking precedence over his duties in the House.

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin voiced his discontent, describing the situation as ‘worrying’ since Parliamentary rules allow for a member to assume the Speaker’s role in their absence. The Effutu MP stressed that the decision to adjourn and reopen Parliament should not be viewed as a mere administrative matter, as the House operates on the principle of consensus-driven decision-making.

Despite their strong opposition to the Speaker’s unilateral decision to adjourn the House indefinitely, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin emphasized that they wish to avoid confrontation with the Speaker. However, he stressed that they ‘vehemently disagree’ with the decision.

To address the situation, Afenyo-Markin announced that the caucus will initiate the process to recall Parliament, starting immediately, by consulting, obtaining the necessary consent from members, and gathering signatures as required by law.
