In her opening remarks, Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, expressed gratitude to her predecessor, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and emphasized the importance of positioning the media as the fourth estate of governance. She encouraged participants to take full advantage of the programme and learn from facilitators to build a strong media landscape.

Prof. Eric Opoku Mensah, Vice Chancellor of UNIMAC on his part, welcomed participants and stated that the goal of the programme is to increase professionalism in journalists and their media houses, especially in an election year.

He highlighted the introduction of election reporting as a key aspect of the programme.

Ms. Gloria Hadzi, the Chairperson of the working committee, emphasized the need for ethical and skilled journalists in today’s changing world, calling the programme an investment in the future of the media. She stressed the importance of restoring trust in the media as a key pillar of democracy.

Solidarity messages were received from PRINPAG, Ghana Journalist Association, and GIBA.

Vice President of GIBA, Ernest Boateng, stated;

“This initiative represents more than just a training opportunity, it signifies a collective dedication to advancing a vibrant ethical and informed media landscape. Through programmes like this, you further learn about the culture of accountability, ethical reporting and balanced story values that are indispensable in any thriving democracy.”

The programme, which runs from September 10th to 13th, aims to equip journalists with essential skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the 21st-century media space.
