A substantial military and police presence has been deployed at the Ho Central Mosque on Friday, 2 January 2026, following directives from the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to temporarily close the facility and prevent further unrest in the Zongo community.
The heightened security comes in the wake of a recent shooting at the mosque that left several people injured, escalating tensions in the area. As of today, approximately 70 security personnel have been stationed at the mosque, restricting access to the premises.
While security forces had been deployed following the shooting, their presence was significantly reinforced today to ensure that no prayers are held. This step was taken after reports that some individuals visited the mosque on Thursday, raising concerns about potential defiance of the closure order and the risk of renewed disturbances.
Authorities maintain that the temporary closure and strengthened security measures are necessary to preserve peace while investigations into the shooting continue.
However, some community members have expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that the closure limits their ability to pray and participate in community activities.
