The Minority in Parliament has expressed serious concerns regarding the procedural and constitutional implications of the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiamah as Governor of the Bank of Ghana.

The announcement from the Acting Spokesperson to the President, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, dated January 31, 2025, stated that Dr. Asiamah’s nomination was pending approval by the Council of State.

In a letter to President Mahama, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo Markin mentioned that,
reports from various media houses indicate that Dr. Asiamah has already proceeded to the Bank of Ghana and assumed the responsibilities of the office, engaging in meetings and official activities.

Afenyo-Markin addressed President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing the irregularity of this situation.

“With all due respect, Your Excellency, it is concerning that an individual who has merely been nominated, and whose appointment is still pending approval by the Council of State, has taken on the responsibilities of the office”.

The Minority Leader urged President Mahama to address the matter and ensure that institutional processes are respected.

He also highlighted the potential implications if the Council of State, upon its constitution, decides against approving Dr. Asiamah’s nomination.

“What measures will be taken to address the actions he has already undertaken in his assumed capacity?”.

“While awaiting confirmation, he can seek any necessary briefings outside the formal assumption of office” he added.
