Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG) has expressed deep concern about the escalating menace of illegal mining causing damage to the environment, economy, human lives and mobile Money industry.

According to them, the activities of illegal mining has resulted in the loss of livelihood of Mobile Money agents operating in affected areas, increased risk of money laundering and terrorist financing through illegal mining channels, increased risk of armed robbery attacks on mobile money agents, significant revenue loses to the government, widespread water pollution and many others. “In light of government’s inaction, MoMAG is left no choice but to consider a nationwide strike.

The strike could significantly impact the economy and affect mobile money transactions, bill payment, salary payments and financial inclusion initiatives”.

A statement signed by Kingsley Amoako Atta, National Secretary for MoMAG urged government to declare state of emergency over all water bodies, enhance law and regulations governing mining activities, provide alternative livelihood for illegal miners, protect and restore affected environment and ensure the safety and security for mobile money agents and customers.
