Mortuary workers across Ghana are set to begin a nationwide strike on Thursday, September 26, 2024, in protest against poor working conditions and unresolved grievances.
The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) issued a formal notice to the government, accusing it of deliberately neglecting their demands.
In a statement released on Tuesday, September 17, MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan described the strike as a last resort following numerous unsuccessful attempts to resolve the issues.
Workers have raised serious concerns, including the lack of adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which exposes them to health risks and hazardous conditions.
In addition, salary arrears dating back to 2020 remain unpaid, and a request for financial clearance to hire 500 additional workers has been ignored.
MOWAG is also calling for the payment of the COVID-19 bonus promised by the President, which mortuary workers have yet to receive.
The statement further highlighted the alarming number of deaths among mortuary workers, with 16 fatalities reported within a single year, underscoring the urgency of their demands.
As a result, members are expected to remain at home, and all mortuaries will be closed until their grievances are addressed.
