Mother of one of the Rastafarian students rejected by Achimota Senior High School, Maanaa Myers says she will not allow her son into the school should authorities rescind their current decision.
The issue of Rastafarians made waves in the media as two Rastafarian students were denied admission at the Achimota School on their first day after reporting in dreadlocks.
Subsequently, the Ghana Education Service directed the School to admit these students as the Director-General of the GES, Prof. Kwasi-Opoku Amankwa stated in an interview that no school can deny students admission on the basis of their religion but however rescinded the decision to rather support the school.
On her account, she fears what school authorities may do to her son should she allow him into Achimota Senior High School.
Her comments come after a tripartite meeting was held between the Ghana Education Service, the Headmistress of the Achimota School and herself.
Maanaa Myers recounts that the meeting which she expected to be productive only turned out to be one of intimidation and unconcern.
Speaking to host of the Happy Morning Show, Samuel Eshun on whether she is ready to send her son to another school if they choose to admit him with his dreadlocks, she said, “To be frank, from the kind of display I saw from the authorities of Achimota SHS, I will not allow my kid go there even if they tell him to come to school today.
I know they will stigmatize him and might probably set him up just to make a case. They can do anything at all and I don’t trust them to leave my child with them. So if they should even tell me to leave my child with them I wouldn’t take him”.
On her authority, the family is open to take the boy to any other school apart from Achimota SHS.
“He chose Accra Academy for the compulsory day school category so we are thinking of pursuing that. They equally accepted him it is just that Achimota gave him an official letter”, she disclosed.
