The Kekeli Muslim Community in Ghana has urged President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 appointed Mohammed Abdul-Salam, the former Northern Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as the Acting CEO of the NLA.

Speaking to Bismark Brown on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben show, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Kekeli Muslim Community, Asass Ali Abass, condemned the appointment, citing religious concerns.

He explained that, as Muslims, they are guided by principles of righteousness and adherence to the teachings of the Qur’an, which clearly forbids gambling. He specifically referenced Qur’an Chapter 5, Verse 90, which warns Muslims to avoid gambling, describing it as sinful and evil.

Asass Ali Abass argued that since gambling is prohibited in Islam, it is inappropriate for a Muslim to lead an institution like the NLA. He, therefore, called on President Mahama to revoke Abdul-Salam’s appointment and reassign him to a different institution that aligns with Islamic values.
