Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Caretaker Minister for Finance, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has said that the construction of a National Cathedral still remains a national priority even though the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed its construction.

Delivering the 2021 budget statement in Parliament today, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated: “The National Cathedral, which will provide an interdenominational sacred space for the nation, remains a national priority. Despite delays caused by COVID-19 pandemic, work is on course to construct the iconic edifice in the heart of the nation’s capital”.

The National Cathedral of Ghana is an inter-denominational Christian church proposed by the government in March 2017 to be built as part of the legacy to commemorate the country’s 60th anniversary.

Initial construction of the Cathedral was supposed to commence in April 2020 after the laying of a foundation stone on March 5 last year. However, the construction of the Cathedral was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The work on the construction was expected to resume in October,2020 following the easing of Coronavirus restrictions in Ghana.
