NPP Deputy General Secretary reveals why Campaign for Made In Ghana Rice won't last

Lawyer and Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahene has said that, the Patronizing Made in Ghana Rice campaign will be short lived.

Speaking on Happy FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ the NPP’s Deputy General Secretary said: “Whilst we are saying we need local rice, are we sure that there is enough local rice to supply. The local rice is very good but even Ghanaians living in Accra can finish the current stock in the country.”

According to him, Ghana as a nation has not been organized well enough to ensure a consistent and constant production of local rice. “We should have set a target for ourselves. And in the process given ourselves a time frame to consolidate ourselves and stop importing rice”, he stated.

On his authority, the current government which he is a part of should have fine-tuned the minds of Ghanaians to local rice first before promoting this agenda. “The government could have started by deciding as a nation to provide the Senior High Schools (SHS) with local rice and stocked the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) with local rice.”

Ghanaian businessman and media personality, Samuel Attah-Mensah recently revived the buzz around the consumption of locally-produced rice in the country following his Operation Feed Yourself campaign.

Ghana’s huge appetite for imported rice according to some stakeholders has had an apparent negative effect on the national economy, thus the call to reduce or halt the over-dependence.
