NPP doesn’t reward failure with second chances - Kennedy Agyapong

Former NPP flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has insisted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) cannot afford to overlook poor performance in its leadership choices, especially after losing over two million votes in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in Mampong during a condolence visit to mourn the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu, Agyapong told party members that the NPP has never had a tradition of giving underperforming presidential candidates a second chance.

He stated that in the party’s history, failure at the polls has never been rewarded with another opportunity, adding that the party did not offer one to Adu Boahen after his defeat in 1992 pointing out that despite Boahen’s key role in Ghana’s democratic revival, the party chose to move on following his defeat.

His remarks were widely interpreted as a criticism of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 elections and lost to the NDC.

According to Agyapong, second chances within the NPP must be earned through credible electoral performance, not granted out of sympathy or incumbency advantage.

Positioning himself as a reform advocate, Agyapong maintained that true loyalty to the NPP should be based on results and accountability rather than unconditional support.
