NPP Youth Wing urges Government to maintain Nursing and Teacher Trainees allowances

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has urged President John Mahama to uphold his campaign promise of maintaining allowances for nursing and teacher trainees.

According to the party’s National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, just one month into office, the Mahama administration is already facing criticism for allegedly planning to cancel these crucial allowances.

Expressing concern on the potential cancellation of the allowance, Salam Mustapha stated, “We knew Mahama would renege on his campaign promises, but it is shocking how soon it has begun. We are gobsmacked to notice the intention to cancel teacher and nursing training allowances, which is in flagrant contrast to their promise of prompt payments during the 2024 elections campaign. This amounts to deception and smacks of scam as these students fell for the promises of the NDC and voted massively for them.”

Salam Mustapha in a statement demanded that the government acts in truth and good spirit, maintaining the allowances not just because it was a campaign promise, but also because of the significant benefits to the students.

Mustapha added that, “It is lame to argue that this government wants to cancel the allowances and improve the student loan facility for all students across third-cycle educational institutions. The fact is that teacher and nursing training schools remain colleges and have not been given university status, which would have made the government’s argument sensible.”

He encouraged students of colleges of education and nursing training schools to stand up for their dignity.

“Rise up in defense of your dignity that has been insulted and the scam the NDC government is about to perpetuate on you.
The National Youth Wing of the NPP will stand with you and fight with you for the restoration of your dignity”.
