The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has recorded a significant breakthrough in its intensified campaign against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. In a coordinated effort involving the Blue Water Guards and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), a joint task force has seized more than 12 excavators and multiple changfan machines used by illegal miners in the Eastern and Western Regions.
The week-long operation focused on key illegal mining hotspots that have suffered extensive environmental damage, including the destruction of farmlands and contamination of major water bodies. Authorities confirmed that all confiscated equipment has been relocated to secured sites, while investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute those responsible for the illicit operations.
The Ministry reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources and emphasized that individuals found engaging in illegal mining activities will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Officials also assured the public that similar high-impact operations will be carried out in the coming weeks, as part of a sustained national effort to restore degraded lands and polluted rivers.
