More than 300 residents of Awutu Bereku and Gomoa Fetteh Kakraba were left stranded following heavy rains on Saturday night that triggered severe flooding across the area.

According to eyewitnesses, residents were trapped in their homes as floodwaters rose rapidly, forcing emergency intervention by the Awutu Senya West branch of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO).

Victims were rescued and temporarily accommodated in nearby hotels to ensure their safety.

Some victims recounted their harrowing experiences. They appealed to the government for urgent support and logistics to help NADMO respond effectively, citing a lack of equipment and resources to handle the crisis.

The NADMO Director of the district, Rayback Adams Salifu, urged residents to stop building in waterlogged areas, warning that poor urban planning contributed significantly to the disaster.

Meanwhile, several residents blamed ongoing construction on the Kasoa-Winneba highway for exacerbating the flooding, pointing fingers at the contractor for failing to address proper drainage.

Reacting to the situation, District Chief Executive Kalala Eghan Nyamekye pledged immediate action, including dredging clogged drains in flood-prone zones.

The traditional leader (Odikro) of Gomoa Fetteh Kakraba, Nana Essel Amoakondo III, has also approved plans by the Gomoa East NADMO director to begin demolition of unauthorized structures obstructing waterways.
