Former Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alhaji Mohammed Saani has disclosed that, over thirty thousand (30,000) Ghanaians participated in the demonstration against the compilation of new voters register by the Electoral Commission.

Speaking about the demonstration held in Kumasi in the Ashanti region today, on Happy98.9FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’, Alhaji Saani stated, “we were anticipating to get over twenty thousand (20,000) people but those who participated were more than that. We had over thirty thousand (30,000) participating even though today is a Tuesday.”

According to him, everyone was present at the Kumasi Jubilee Park to support the demonstration though it was an official working day. “Gradually people are beginning to appreciate the issue and we are satisfied with the attendance of today’s demonstration even though it was a working day,” he said.

The main opposition NDC and other parties took to the streets of Kumasi today to protest the compilation of the new voter’s registry ahead of the December presidential and parliamentary polls.

The first protest to challenge plans of the new register was held at Tamale in the Northern region. The group insist a new register is a waste of taxpayers money and could also create tension since the election is close.

The electoral commission, however, insists they will go ahead and create the register despite the disagreement by the parties and civil society organisations.
