The Appointments Committee of Parliament is set to commence the vetting of seven Supreme Court nominees today, June 16, 2025, continuing through Wednesday, June 18.

The nominees recommended by President John Mahama on April 29 are going to be assessed on their qualifications, judicial experience, and legal philosophies to determine their suitability for the nation’s highest court.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, formally referred the nominations to the Committee on May 27 under Article 144(2) of the 1992 Constitution. He also directed the Judiciary Committee and the Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to support the vetting process.

The nominees include:

– Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei

– Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh

– Justice Senyo Dzamefe

– Justice Kweku Tawiah

– Justice Ackaah-Boafo

– Justice Philip Bright Mensah

– Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo

– Justice Hafisata Amaleboba

Their appointments have drawn criticism from the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), which alleges the nominations are part of a broader “third-term political agenda.”

Despite these political concerns, the vetting is expected to proceed on schedule, with the Committee expected to present its report before Parliament adjourns for recess.
