A police constable was killed on Sunday amid a resurgence of violent attacks in Bawku in the Upper East Region, according to local media.

The deceased named as Regina Angenu who was with the Paga Police Station reportedly paid a visit to his colleague, Erasmus Enkson, another officer with the Bawku Division.

Both officers however came under attack at about 5:07 p.m., by unknown gunmen, who shot her in the process. The victim who sustained gunshot wounds at her groin region was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Presbyterian Mission Hospital.

The body has been sent to Bolgatanga Regional Hospital for preservation and autopsy, Joy FM reported.

It is still not clear about the status of her other colleague. The Ghana Police Service was yet to provide further details as the development has forced the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC) to impose a ban on the use of motorbikes in the conflict-hit town.

The new restriction comes weeks after the REGSEC imposed restrictions on the use of motorbikes to lift male residents within the municipality.

According to the RESEG, the deteriorating insecurity situation in the area necessitated the ban.

In a statement, the REGSEC said tricycles, which are a popular means of transport in most parts of the Upper East Region, have, however, been exempted.

The RESEG has directed the Bawku Municipal Security Council to enforce the ban immediately.
