Editor of online news portal, WhatsUp News, David Tamakloe, has accused President Akufo-Addo of being a coward in the fight against illegal mining, otherwise known as ‘galamsey’.
He posits the fight against galamsey can only be worn through political will, a power only wielded by President Akuffo-Addo.
“We all agree the fight against galamsey is an issue of political will and the only person with the mandate to exercise this will is the President. The media, ministers, civil societies and what have you can only unearth and publicize galamsey activities, but if the President refuses to do anything to resolve this illegality then, their efforts would’ve gone to waste. The President does not have the balls to solve the issue of galamsey,” he told Samuel Eshun on the Editors’ Take Edition of the Happy Morning Show.
Proffering the solution to galamsey, David Tamakloe advised President Akufo-Addo to leave office voluntarily.
“The first solution to the issue of galamsey is for President Akufo-Addo to abdicate his seat. President Akufo-Addo has failed and if he can’t sack his ministers then he should leave office. The constitution has made the provision that any President incapable of governance should leave the seat and let another person take over.”
Ghana’s tradition of artisanal gold mining and the gold price boom which began in 2007 led tens of thousands of Chinese migrants to seek their fortunes in Ghana.
Bringing heavy machinery, illegal Chinese gold miners precipitated economic and social instability as well as increases in gun violence, drug trafficking and corruption
Ghana is working hard to fight against illegal mining – or galamsey – but widespread corruption has hamstrung government efforts.
