Onion Traders at Dominase Market in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region have revealed that the high cost of onions is a result of transportation challenges.

According to them, they cannot be blamed for the high cost of onions, but rather, the normal routes they use to transport onions into this country have suddenly changed because of coups in neighboring countries.

Speaking to Happyghana.com, the traders indicated that due to the coup in Niger, the normal route they used to ply has been blocked, and they now have to use a longer route.

“Due to the longer routes we ply on, we spend a lot of money unlike the normal route.”

They also said a bag of onions used to sell between 500-700 but now a bag costs about GHC 1,300-1,500.

Moreover, the exchange rate between the cedis and CFA has also affected prices.

“Ghanaians always talk about the dollar forgetting the impact of CFA in our business,” the traders said

They are calling on the government to, as a matter of urgency, engage ECOWAS to address this challenge to ensure better trading among West African countries.
