Ghanaian economist Rev. Dr. Worlanyor Mensah has urged government to consider property tax as a viable revenue generator for Ghana’s development.

Speaking in an interview on Happy 98.9FM’s Happy Morning Show, the Economist touted the collection of property taxe as a channel of revenue that will earn Ghana worldwide recognition, should it be successfully implemented – sure to draw in a substantial amount of revenue each year. “Those who have landed properties can pay like 50 cedis per annum and those who are building properties can pay 100 cedis per annum. I think other African countries will come and learn from Ghana. If we are able to succeed in doing that.” he explained.

Rev. Dr. Mensah believes that with proper planning and a structured approach, especially within the urban parts of the country, property tax would be successfully implemented. “We need to look at the property tax and I think we should look at Tema, Ashaiman, Accra, Dawenya, Afienya, Dodowa, Achimota all the way to Kasoa enclave if everyone is paying 50 cedis for their plot of land definitely that would be revenue any country can generate.”
