Communication Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Boateng, has challenged the ruling government to prove claims they used funds for COVID-19 relief on the 2020 general elections as false.

The politician argues the government can only prove this claim false by making public a complete breakdown of the funds and allocations thereof.

“We need the figures to assure accountability. It is prudent the gov’t in power let us know the breakdown of the money used instead of just telling us they spent 9million dollars on food distribution when churches which supplied more food used a lesser amount. We are not saying the gov’t did nothing during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic but we are asking them to tell us those who got the food and how much was spent on each person. We need the breakdown.”

Former President John Mahama has accused President Akufo-Addo of misappropriating monies meant for Covid-19 relief.

According to him, the President channeled some ¢33 billion earmarked to offset the pandemic’s grave implications into his 2020 re-election bid.

For this reason, for President Mahama believes, the said amount supposed to have been sunk into the economic restoration measures is yet to be accounted for.

Kwaku Boateng supporting this claim in a panel discussion with Don Kwabena Prah on Happy98.9FM’s Epa Hoa Daben political talk show added, “During the NPP primaries ahead of the 2020 elections, we saw members of the party sharing tons of cash to their members. We heard news of NPP delegates and others receiving as much as GH₵2,000 from Parliamentary Candidates. All these leave doubts in our minds over the real use of COVID-19 relief funds, hence our call for accountability.”

Regarding the NDC as a responsible opposition, the communicator described the call for an audited report on the COVID-19 relief funds as one being made by the entire Ghana.

“The NPP should bring us the details of the funds and we will commend them if they used these monies for the right thing. But every Ghanaian knows this is not possible because the NPP used the money for the 2020 general elections,” he stated.

To him, this call is beyond partisan politics and reiterated the need for a probe into the disbursement of funds meant for COVID-19 relief.
