Indiscipline amongst students is one thing we cannot do away with, and always affects the success of management of any educational institution.
According to reports, a group of 2021, Senior High School graduates of Yinahin Catholic SHS, set portions of the school’s dormitory ablaze hours after finishing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
According to HappyFM/e.TV Ashanti Regional correspondent, Isaac Asiedu, the students set the boys dormitory on fire because school authorities did not allow them to cheat during their final exams.
Isaac Asiedu giving an update on the Happy Morning show said “Indiscipline in the school is a major problem now. Some day students perch with boarding students when they all know it is against the school rules and regulations. The students disregard rules and regulations so much and have no respect for their teachers and because of that, the teachers are unable to control them.”
Sharing how the fire was started, he explained, that the students after their exam acquired a gallon of petrol, sprinkled it all around the dormitory and set is ablaze, destroying property worth thousands of cedis.
He revealed that the school authorities have invited experts to analyze the remnants of the building and advise. “After this assessment, we will know if we have to pull down the building or renovate it.”
Fire officers who were at the scene to douse the fire according to reports were also attacked and blocked by the suspected students as they watched the facility burn.
Though no casualties were recorded, it has left some continuing students stranded with some classrooms being converted into dormitories.
Currently, the Ghana Police Service together with the authorities of the school has commenced investigations into the incident for possible arrests and sanctions against any person found culpable.
The Ghana Education Service has warned that it will not condone acts of indiscipline in any school and asked the final-year senior high school students to comport themselves and abide by the rules and regulations in their various schools as failure to do that will only result in the necessary sanctions against culprits.
