The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has announced that victims of the Weija Dam Spillage are receiving relief from the collective efforts of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Municipal Assembly and GWCL, following the fact that residents had to contend with the damages caused by the water spillage.

Speaking to Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, Chief Manager of Public Relations at the GWCL, Stanley Martey disclosed, “Our management and representatives from the Municipal Assembly and NADMO were within the area to check how we can support those who are displaced. It’s been ongoing. We have provided relief items and we will continue today. Some are living in churches while others are living in school buildings. Yesterday, we sent some water tankers to that area and today too we will assess and send more water. As we provide them with water, NADMO will provide them with relief items and then the district assemblies will do what they have to do to make sure they get a place to lay their heads.

We also need to dredge the estuary so that the water will flow. We have heard from the Municipal Assemblies that there will be demolition of structures along the course of the river”.

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) announced the spilling of excess water from the Weija Dam due to the downpour in the catchment area of the Densu River basin. The spillage which began on Sunday, 11th October 2020 affected communities including Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, Ada Kopey and surrounding communities.

The Company has said that it is expecting more rains and as such the spillage will continue until the volume of water in the dam reaches the safe operating level.
