The Sekyere South Municipal Director of Education, Solomon Owusu, has appealed to parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s education, cautioning against prioritising social spending over essential academic needs.
Speaking at a grand durbar to honour outstanding students in a recent quiz competition, Mr. Owusu expressed concern that some parents spend lavishly on funerals while neglecting their children’s basic school supplies.
He warned that such neglect can have long-term effects on children, influencing them to adopt a careless attitude towards life and weakening their sense of empathy and responsibility.
“We need to support our children’s education. Let’s not ignore their needs while we spend on less important things,” he said.
The event celebrated top-performing students, including those from Asante Agona SDA JHS, who excelled in Mathematics, English, and Science. The students expressed gratitude to their teachers and school leaders for their guidance and support.
“We thank our teachers for helping us prepare and win. This means a lot to us,” the awardees said.
The Headmaster of Agona SDA Basic School, Pandit Asamoah, commended Mr. Owusu for initiating the quiz competition, noting that it has rekindled academic interest among both students and teachers.
He further appealed to philanthropists and benevolent organisations to support the school with infrastructure.
“Our student numbers keep increasing, and we’re running out of space. We need support to expand our classrooms,” Mr. Asamoah stated.
