Sin taxes like bet tax should be increased and not scrapped - Professor Adei tell’s Mahama

Professor Stephen Adei, a former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) has advised president elect John Dramani Mahama not to scrap betting tax.

According to him, a sin tax like betting tax should be increased by the government and not scrapped.

Professor Adei’s statement comes on the back of President Mahama’s campaign promise to scrap the tax on betting winnings which was introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration in 2024.

While condemning betting and tagging it as evil, he urged the incoming government to increase the tax from 10 to 50 percent and not scrap it.

“Sin taxes like bet tax must be increased and not scrapped. I will urge them to take it to 50 percent because it is a disastrous habit that ought to be discouraged.”

He added that he would have maintained e-levy and removed or reduced other taxes if he was the one going to handle the economy under the new regime.”

“I would rather reduce other taxes and keep elevy may be at a reduced rate while removing the multiplicity
