Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has called on President John Mahama to adopt a firm and irreversible stance in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Speaking at the 29th GJA Media Awards in the Ashanti Region, hosted by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Mr. Dwumfour commended the President for ongoing efforts to tackle the menace.
However, he stressed that much more needs to be done, warning that illegal miners continue to act with impunity, posing serious threats to the country’s environment and the wellbeing of future generations.
“Mr. President, the time has come for a bold, symbolic step one that communicates to Ghanaians and the world that this government is fully committed to winning the war against galamsey,” he said.
Mr. Dwumfour’s remarks come amid heightened public scrutiny of illegal mining activities, which continue to degrade forests, rivers, and agricultural lands across the country.
