Today In Sports History: Black Queens win bronze at the 2000 Africa Women’s Championship

On this day 24 November 2000 (Exactly 19 years ago today) The Ghana women’s national team, the Black Queens defeated their Zimbabwean counterparts, the Amazons 6-3 to salvage some lost pride in a one-sided third-place play off in the African Women’s Championship at the Vosloorus Stadium in South Africa.

Eight goals were scored in the first-half with Ghana leading 6-2 before the interval, and despite the Zimbabweans gallant fight back, the Amazons could only manage to add a single goal to the deficit.

Ghana were runner-up in 1998, but failed to reach the final in this edition after South Africa edged out the Black Queens in the semi-finals by a lone goal.

Zimbabwe  conceded 12 goals in their last two matches after losing the semi-finals 6-0 to Nigeria, following an impressive performance in the group matches against South Africa, Uganda and Reunion.

Goals by Elizabeth Baidu , Adjoa Bayor, Memuna Barku, Gloria Foriwa and an own goal by Rosemary Mutabza assured Ghana the Bronce medal in Johannesburg.

On this day 24 November 2002 (Exactly 17 years ago today) Algerian club JS Kabylie lifted the CAF Cup a record third consecutive time despite losing 1-0 to Tonnerre de Yaounde in Cameroon. JSK won the tie 4-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg 4-0 two weeks earlier.

On this day 24 November 1996 (Exactly 23 years ago today) American Pete Sampras won his 3rd ATP Tour World Championship tennis titles with a classic 3–6, 7–6, 7–6, 6–7, 6–4 victory over defending champion Boris Becker in Hanover, Germany

It  was Sampras’ 8th title of the year and the 45th of his career.

On this day 24 November 2013 (Exactly 6 years ago today) German Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix; his record 9th straight GP victory; record equalling 13th consecutive GP win; 4th straight World Drivers Championship
