On this day 6 January 2002 (Exactly 18 years ago today) The Sportswriters Association of Ghana (SWAG) named then Germany-based Ghanaian international soccer star, Samuel Osei Kuffuor, as the nation’s Sportsman and Footballer of the Year 2001.

A statement issued in Accra and signed by the association’s secretary, Mr Emmanuel Amoako, said by this achievement, Kuffour becomes the third footballer in the history of the SWAG awards to have grabbed the two topmost awards at a go.

Two footballers who achieved similar feats before Kuffour are Abedi Ayew Pele and Tony Yeboah.

During the year under review, Kuffour was part of the Bayern Munich team that won the European Cup in May 2001 and also played a key role in helping them win the German Bundesliga title.

He also scored the winner in the World Club final against Boca Juniors.

On this day 6 January 2018 (Exactly 2 years ago today ) Ghana’s Isaac Dogboe knocked out Mexican Cesar Juarez at the Bukom Boxing Arena in the 5th round, for the vacant WBO Interim Super Bantamweight title

On this day 6 January 1681 (Exactly 339 years ago today) The first recorded boxing match took place in Britain when Christopher Monck, 2nd Duke of Albemarle (and later Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica) engineered a bout between his butler and his butcher with the latter winning the prize. Early fighting had no written rules

On this day 6 January 1970 (Exactly 50 years ago today) Australian boxer Johnny Famechon retained his WBC featherweight title with a 14th-round knockout of Fighting Harada in Tokyo; re-match of questionable 15-round decision in 1969 in his first title defence
