MMTL redirects buses to ease Accra transport crunch

MMTL redirects buses to ease Accra transport crunch Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL) has reduced some of its intercity bus services to focus on intracity operations in Accra, aiming to ease transport challenges in the capital. This move involves scaling down long-distance routes, such as those to Kumasi and Cape Coast, to allocate more buses to high-demand intracity routes like Adenta, Kasoa, Amasaman, and Nsawam. The decision follows directives from the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, to support private transport operators during peak hours. MMTL is currently operating with a limited fleet of 115 buses, down from over 1,000 when it started in 2004, but is working to maximize available resources. This initiative aims to boost MMT’s operations, improve service coverage, and reduce congestion pressures in major urban centers. “We are committed to improving transport services in Accra and ensuring that our buses are deployed where they are most needed,” said an MMTL spokesperson. The public is encouraged to take advantage of the enhanced intracity services, and MMTL apologizes for any inconvenience caused by the reduction in intercity services.

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a trader for allegedly biting off the forefinger of General Sergeant Kwame Abu, a policeman when effecting his arrest for offensive conduct.

Promise Anoma, 25 pleaded not guilty to resisting arrest and causing harm.

He will reappear before the court on Friday, November 29.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel Ohene Agyei told the Court presided over by Mrs Jane Harriet Akweley Quaye that General Sergeant Abu is a resident at Nungua Nautical whilst Anoma lived at Texpo on the Spintex Road.

He said on November 03, this year, the complainant, together with General Corporal Alfred Bortey Borketey and Lance Corporal Jerry Opei on board a police vehicle with the registration number GP 5064 being driven by Lance Corporal Opei, proceeded to arrest the accused whom a witness had reported a case against him at the Nungua Police station.

Chief Inspector Ohene Agyei explained that when they got to where the accused was, Sergeant Abu went to a washroom close by, whilst his two colleagues approached Anoma.

He said the officers informed him of why he was being arrested and was walking him to the police vehicle when he requested to make a call, but the officers asked him to enter the vehicle and make the call at the station.

He said the accused person refused to join the vehicle and attempted to attack Lance Corporal Opei but Sergeant Abu, who had returned to the vehicle prevented him from doing so, but unfortunately, his right forefinger slipped into his mouth making Anoma to bite it off.

Prosecution said they called for reinforcement and Anoma was arrested and sent to the Police station.
