U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest travel restrictions have officially gone into effect, barring citizens from Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen from entering the United States.
Additionally, travel for citizens from seven other nations, including Togo, will be partially restricted.
The administration cited concerns over terrorism, visa security, and traveller identity verification as reasons for the policy, referencing a recent incident in Colorado involving an Egyptian national though Egypt is not on the list.
The ban has drawn strong reactions from officials and citizens in the affected nations, with many expressing shock and disappointment.
Some exemptions remain for U.S. permanent residents, diplomats, athletes, and immediate family members of U.S. citizens.
