Two articulated trucks carrying 600 bags of cocoa beans went up in flames Monday morning following a head on collision near the Tema motorway roundabout.

One of the trucks was moving from a waiting yard towards the weighbridge area while the other was making a U-turn to join a queue for the weighbridge when they collided resulting in a spontaneous fire outbreak.

No casualty was recorded in the 7:35am incident as the two drivers managed to escape before the fire intensified.

The timely intervention by the Ghana National Fire Service saved cocoa beans and the trucks from totally burning.

The trucks, registered GN 4814 –Y and GS 4519-11 belong to the Produce Buying Company and Trans Royal.

“It took us five minutes to get to the place. Upon arrival, we realise two trucks had collided resulting in the fire outbreak,” Deputy Fire Regional Commander at Tema, Timothy Affum told 3news.com.

He said both truck “got partially burnt and affected some of the beans,” noting “the intensity was such that we had to use tree fire tenders to bring the situation under control”.

Mr Affum said personnel from the Motorway Fire Station arrived at the scene first but had to seek assistance from the Industrial Area Fire Station. According to him, they needed more water so the Tema Metro Fire Station was called in.

Owners of the Tarzan yard where the incident occurred expressed shock at the development.
