The Supreme Court of Ghana is set to deliver a landmark judgment today, on the disputed decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant, sparking significant political debate and renewed focus on the Speaker’s constitutional powers.
The Supreme Court adjourned on Monday, November 11, and will deliver its ruling today, Tuesday, November 12. This comes after the court had previously scheduled the ruling for Monday, but rescheduled for today.
The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has brought a case challenging Speaker Alban Bagbin’s declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant without judicial oversight or the initiation of by-elections.
This dispute centers on Bagbin’s interpretation of the 1992 Constitution regarding parliamentary vacancies, with Bagbin arguing that the MPs in question violated constitutional requirements, justifying their removal from office on October 17, 2024.
