Ghanaian historian, Kwaku Darko Ankrah, has urged Ghanaians to make thoughtful decisions when voting, emphasizing the need for voters to have clear and meaningful reasons behind their choices.

Speaking in anticipation of the upcoming Democracy Day celebrations, he highlighted that democracy is about improving the lives of citizens through voting, which makes it important for people to understand why and for whom they decide to vote for.

According to him, many Ghanaians vote based on misguided reasons, such as long standing party loyalty or the physical appearance of candidates, instead of focusing on the future well being of themselves and future generations.

In an interview with Bismark Brown on Happy 98.9FM’s Epahoadab3n show he said, “It saddens me to hear the reasons people sometimes give for voting. Some vote because they were born into a particular party, others for personal gain, or even because a candidate is attractive”.

He emphasized the importance of voter education, pointing out that the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) should play a key role in ensuring that people understand the significance of their vote.

“This is why, during elections, you join long queues and the scorching sun because you’re seeking positive change in your life. But if your vote is motivated by personal interests or promises of money or positions from politicians, you’ve missed the true purpose of voting,” Ankrah remarked.

As the December 7 elections draw near, he encouraged Ghanaians to think about their families and the future, urging them to vote for leaders who will strengthen the economy and bring about lasting improvements for the country.
