The Second Deputy Minority Whip and Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on the government to take urgent action to address the persistent issue of flooding in his constituency and the Greater Accra Region.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 27, he highlighted the devastating effects of flooding on residents, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

He attributed the problem to inadequate drainage systems, encroachment on water bodies, poor waste management, and ineffective urban planning.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, March 27, he specifically mentioned Kele, a coastal community in his constituency, where more than 60 homes have been submerged due to heavy rainfall and tidal waves.

He described the distress of affected families who have lost their homes, belongings, and sense of security due to inadequate drainage infrastructure.

“Mr. Speaker each time it rains I find myself along with my team moving through the constituency to access the damage, check on the victims and offer support where possible.

This has become a recurring situation as our people constantly face the uncertainty of their homes being submerged or damaged”, he noted.

The MP stressed that flooding has far-reaching consequences beyond immediate damage.

He noted that roads, schools, and health facilities are often destroyed, disrupting essential services and placing a financial burden on affected families.
