A total of 118 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates who contested the 2024 general elections have openly declared their support for former Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential primaries, describing him as the most prepared and electable candidate.
At a press conference held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the group said their endorsement followed a careful evaluation of all individuals seeking the party’s flagbearership. They cited Dr Bawumia’s experience, competence, vision, and leadership qualities as unmatched among the aspirants.
Speaking on behalf of the group, former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, said they had thoroughly assessed the credentials and campaign messages of all contenders within the party.
“We have followed the campaigns of all these fine gentlemen of our party, many of whom have recorded notable successes in business, governance, and policy formulation. However, when all the critical parameters required to lead our great party into the 2028 elections are considered, we are convinced that none compares to the pedigree, experience, competence, vision, bold ideas, humility, and compassion that Dr Bawumia embodies,” he stated.
Mr Egyapa Mercer described the former Vice President as the most prepared, formidable, and winnable candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election.
The group also dismissed claims that their endorsement was influenced by inducement, pressure, or coercion, stressing that the decision was taken voluntarily and in the best interest of both the party and the nation.
“Whether or not we have consulted our constituencies ahead of the yet-to-be-organised parliamentary primaries is immaterial. Our personal ambitions have no bearing on our collective resolve to support Dr. Bawumia,” he said.
He further emphasized that none of the candidates had been induced or compelled to declare their support, urging the public to disregard any suggestions to the contrary
