The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has deployed a special security team to Gbenyiri in the Savannah Region following reprisal attacks in the community.

A press release issued by the Ghana Police Service Regional Headquarters in Damongo, explained that the deployment followed clashes between some Birifor and Fulani residents in the town.

The statement indicated that the special team, made up of intelligence officers and investigators, has been tasked to support the regional command to intensify security operations and identify persons responsible for the attacks.

The police noted that the operation is aimed at restoring order in the community and ensuring that perpetrators are arrested and brought to justice.

The Savannah Regional Police Command further assured the public that calm has been restored in Gbenyiri and that efforts are underway to track down individuals behind the incidents.

Residents have also been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, on February 28, 2026, the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, received the final report of the Gbenyiri Mediation Committee tasked with addressing inter-communal tensions between the Lobi/Birifor and Gonja communities in the Savannah Region.

The committee, constituted in September 2025, was mandated to promote dialogue, cooperation and peaceful coexistence following renewed clashes in parts of the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District.
