Chief, six others killed in land dispute

Seven persons, including the Chief of Sayeegu and his eldest son, have been killed in a long-standing land dispute between the Sayeegu and Sambiluk communities, near Nakpanduri in the Bunkprugu-Yunyoo District in the Northern Region.
The chief, his son and four others were said to have been killed during an attack on them when they were going to their farms yesterday morning. The seventh person was killed during gunfire exchanges between the two communities.
The police in the area confirmed the story to the Daily Graphic, but declined to give further details.
Security personnel
Following the incident, a combined team of military and police personnel had been deployed to the area to maintain law and order.
At the time of filing this report, the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) was locked up in a meeting in Tamale to discuss strategies to contain the situation.
In April last year,  similar clashes between the two Bimoaba communities claimed the lives of, at least, 22 people, while several properties were destroyed.
According to some residents, who fled the area for fear of reprisal attacks, there was a heavy gun battle between the two communities when information got to the Sayeegu community that their chief and his son, and four others, had been killed by some armed gang believed to be from the Sambiluk community.
Calm returns
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Nalerigu Hospital in the Mamprusi West District in the Northern Region pending further investigations.
The Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Mr Patrick Sarpong, could not be reached for his comments because he was said to be in a REGSEC meeting to discuss how to deal with the problem.
