Former Black Starlets captain Alex Opoku has admitted that Ghana’s 1991 FIFA U-17 World Cup winning squad were overaged.

The retired Ghanaian footballer, now turn Pastor admitted he was three years older than the age for the competition.

The Black Starlets conquered the world at the 1991 FIFA U-17 tournament held in Italy after beating Spain in the final by a lone goal.

Emmanuel Duah scored the only goal of the game to hand Ghana its first international trophy at that level.

Speaking on Happy FM’s Where are they program, Alex Opoku admitted the Black Starlets team were overaged, “We were more than the age during our time. Not only Ghana, but some other countries to have participated in the tournament also engaged in the age cheating”

“I can’t not really tell my age at that time because my mother at that time could not keep record of my birth date. But when I compared I was three or four years older when I played for the Ghana U-17 team”.

Alex Opoku, captain of the team revelation gives credence to earlier reports of age-cheating at the tournament.

FIFA has now introduced MRI tests for age determination in their bid to clamp down on age cheats.
