The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said that its performance in the 2020 elections proves that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) was far behind when it came to competing with the NPP.
The General Secretary of the Party, John Boadu addressing the media at the Party’s headquarters in Accra, noted that its Presidential candidate, President Nana Akufo-Addo, won the election with a four percent point difference which has never happened in the history of Ghana’s electoral landscape since 1996.
“Nana Addo won the election emphatically. With four percentage point difference between him and his challenger, John Dramani Mahama, this is very clear. To have a second term in office with four percentage difference is a huge feat for any presidential candidate to attain. We have never had that in the fourth republic. The difference between the two candidates is 517,231. The presidential election was not even close and therefore there was nothing contentious about it”.
He furthered that the opposition NDC could attest to that as it was observed that during the elections they only spoke on winning majority in parliament rather than speaking on the presidential results.
“If you listen to the NDC, right from day one, they were not even contending about the results coming out of the presidential election. So it is strange now, that their candidate has now woken up from his slumber and he is talking about presidential election. This feat of four percent difference feat has never been achieved by any president since 1996”.
He shared that it will be surprising for anyone to deem the 2020 elections as “contentious”.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana officially declared President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 general election.
The declaration made by the EC Chair, Jean Mensa, indicated that President Akufo-Addo at the end of the polls had 6,730,413 representing 51.595% while his main contender John Mahama of the NDC had 6,214,889 representing 47.366%.
