Inaki Williams, set for his debut AFCON with Ghana, faces a delay in joining the squad due to an illness requiring rest, as confirmed by Athletic Club.

Although selected for the tournament commencing on January 13, 2024, in Ivory Coast, Williams, who transitioned from Spain to Ghana before the 2022 World Cup, will join the Ghanaian camp in Kumasi later than planned due to this recent setback.

The Spanish club stated, “Athletic Club player Iñaki Williams has been assessed by our medical services and requires rest due to an illness. He’s undergone treatment and will be re-evaluated tomorrow to facilitate his travel to join the Ghana training camp as soon as possible. The Ghanaian federation’s medical team has been informed of his condition.”

Named among three center-forwards in the 27-man squad, Williams, aged 29 and born in Spain, eagerly anticipates his AFCON debut, expressing his aspiration to achieve success with Ghana. He remarked, “This is a special moment for me and my family. Winning is my goal. Ghana has immense football passion and high expectations for the team. I’ll give my best.”

Ghana’s success hinges on their performance, with Williams, having scored only one goal for the Black Stars, expected to step up. Progressing from a challenging group including Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique is vital after their disappointing exit in the previous edition.

Despite missing key players like Thomas Partey and Baba Rahman, Ghana aims for an improved AFCON performance this time.
