Ghanaian middle-distance runner Alex Amankwah has seen his journey at the World Athletics Championships come to an early end after missing out on a place in the men’s 800m semi-finals.
Amankwah clocked 1:45.08 to finish eighth in Heat 7, a race won by former world champion Donavan Brazier of the USA in 1:44.66. Algeria’s Slimane Moula (1:44.77) and Croatia’s Marino Bloudek (1:44.78) followed closely behind to secure qualification spots.
The result adds to a mixed outing for Team Ghana so far in Tokyo. Sprinter Abdul Rasheed Saminu narrowly missed the men’s 100m final after placing fourth in the semi-finals, while Benjamin Azamati bowed out in the opening round, finishing sixth in his heat.
With Amankwah now out of contention, the spotlight shifts to Ibrahim Fuseini, who will represent Ghana in the men’s 200m on Wednesday, September 17.
