A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from 2017 to 2024 has declared support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s 2026 presidential primaries.
Gathering under the banner of the Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia, the group held a press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Monday, where they made public their intention to back Dr. Bawumia’s bid for the NPP’s 2028 flagbearership.
“Our endorsement is not merely symbolic; it is a strategic and operational commitment. We will deploy our experience to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message resonates in every corner of Ghana.”
The forum touted its collective experience, with 95% of its members having previously held constituency or regional executive roles within the NPP, some for more than 16 years.
According to them, this wealth of grassroots knowledge uniquely positions them to mobilise efficiently for the campaign.
Dr. Bawumia’s tenure was praised for spearheading major digitization reforms, including the implementation of the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the paperless ports system, initiatives the group said had formalised key economic sectors and improved public service delivery.
Beyond policy, the forum highlighted the former Vice President’s leadership qualities.
“He is accessible, humble, and a unifier who engages all factions of the party. His resonance with the grassroots, the youth, and floating voters gives the NPP a formidable electoral advantage.”
The group argued that based on recent electoral data and national visibility gained during the 2024 elections, Dr. Bawumia presents the NPP’s best chance at securing victory in 2028.
“Fielding a widely recognised candidate offers a head start,” they said, warning of the risks associated with introducing a lesser-known face to the electorate.
Additionally, the Forum outlined a robust strategy to support his campaign, including door-to-door engagements, fundraising drives, and public education on his vision and achievements.
“We, the former MMDCEs, are not just endorsing—we are activating our networks,” they concluded. “Our commitment is total.”
The NPP’s internal elections to select a flagbearer are scheduled for January 31, 2026.
