Commercial sex workers nabbed for robbery attacks

Twenty-nine suspected commercial sex workers who are believed to carry out robbery attacks on their patrons have been nabbed by the Madina Divisional Police Command in a swoop at Kwabenya, a suburb of Accra.

Four men, said to be the accomplices of the commercial sex workers, were also arrested at two drinking spots known as Big Guys and Just Touch at Kwabenya.Apart from one of the sex workers who is 13, the rest are aged 17 to 32, while the male suspects are aged 23 to 27.
The suspects are said to often make away with vehicles, cash, mobile phones and electrical gadgets belonging to their victims.
They were arrested last Saturday as part of efforts to rid the area of criminals.
Modus operandi
Speaking to journalists, the Madina Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police Natogmah Aggrey Yakubu, said the commercial sex workers used three different means to attack their patrons.
He explained that when the patrons took the sex workers to their homes, the women surveyed the environment and then alerted the male robbers.
Armed with the information, the male robbers would locate the houses to loot, either while the commercial sex workers were with their patrons or at a later date.
Mr Yakubu said another modus operandi was for the sex workers to scheme with their male accomplices to trail and attack the patrons while the patrons were taking the sex workers to an agreed destination.
The police said the commercial sex workers also usually created confusion after they had offered their services to their patrons by accusing the patrons of not paying fully and then calling their pimps who ended up attacking the patrons and robbing them.
Mr Yakubu said the 29 suspects were found culpable after screening and so would be put before court.
