Freelance journalist and convener for Good Governance and Advocacy Group, Listowel Nana Poku has opined that the Electoral Commission of Ghana is keen on compiling the new voters’ register because of a huge amount they stand to benefit from the exercise.

According to him, the colossal sum of $28million designated as their per diem is their motivating factor to compile a new voter roll.

The anti-corruption campaigner made this shocking revelation in an interview of Happy 98.9 FM’s ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ with host, Afrifa Mensah. “The EC is insistent on compiling a new voter roll because employees of the commission will benefit from some $28million set aside as their per diem for undertaking the exercise.”

To him, the most painful part of the entire process was the EC turning a deaf ear to all the warnings and concerns being raised about conducting the exercise when cases of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country keep rising.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has indicated that it will complete its proposed new Voters Register for election 2020 by close of May.

The decision to compile a new voters roll has raked up considerable controversy, with the political parties and civil society divided over it’s prudence and timeliness.

However, the EC earlier this week also shared an infographic on their twitter handle indicating precautionary measures the commission is taking for the compilation of the voter roll in this COVID-19 season.
