The Ghana’s former boxing legend of all times has been appointed director of sports by the Ga Paramount Stool to help develop sports in the Gamashie traditional area in the Greater Accra Region.
Azumah Nelson was announced as the director of sports at the paramouncy by King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the Ga Mantse when the stool organized a New Year’s Day party for over one thousand and five hundred children from the Bukum area of Accra.
Azumah Nelson as director of sports is expected to bring his expertise in boxing and other sporting experience to bear in the development of the youth in sports.
The stool established the sports directorate to help develop talents from the area and its environs.
The New Year’s Day celebrations was an event for the Ga Mantse to extends pleasantries to the people as part of the ‘Blon Bii Nya’ meaning people from the horizon and Kusum Gbo/Blema Kpaa nor atsaa which has been with the Ga state over the years.
For the past seven years this event has been missing on the Ga state calendar due to the sporadic chieftaincy dispute that erupted in the area.
The Ga King after touring some principal streets of indigenous Accra said Prof. ‘Zoom Zoom’ Nelson as he is affectionately known will be responsible for the mentoring of the youth in sports in the Bukum area.
He said the paramount stool has set up three endowment funds for the development of the Girl Child and the development of the heritage of the Ga state.
He mentioned the funds as Girl Child Development in collaboration with UNICEF, Ga Support fund and Ga Mantse endowment fund to help develop the Ga state.
According to him, Ga people all the way from Accra to Tema are one people and there is the need for all Gas to unite for the development of the Ga state.
He was of the believed that such measures will eliminate Future Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) that plagued the youth in the area.
